The Importance Of The MV Wire

May 30,2022

MV wire or Medium Voltage wire is a category defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) as having a voltage rating of above 3kV up to 36kV. A specific foundation is used with a medium voltage cable. This involves trenching the cable into a trench…or in some cases, depending on the application, direct burial may be used.

What is Type MV Wire?

Type MV wires are defined as single or multi-conductor cables rated for 2001 volts up to 35,000 volts. Type MV cables are typically specified as either an MV 90 cable or an MV 105 cable, with the 90 or 105 designating the maximum conductor temperature in degrees Celsius (ºC).We can produce 3kv cable, 5kv cable, 10kv cable, 35kv cable, and 66kv cable.

MV cables are intended for use in the installation of electric power distribution systems at voltages of up to 35 kV and temperatures up to 90ºC. The insulation is made of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) which gives it resistance to oils, fuels, and many other chemicals. The jackets are made of PVC compounds that offer excellent flame retardancy and resistance to chemicals and ultraviolet rays.

Features:

• Cross-linked polyethylene insulation provides excellent mechanical strength and excellent electrical properties over a wide range of operating temperatures from -40ºC (-40ºF) up to 90ºC (194ºF).

• PVC jacket provides excellent flame retardancy and resistance to chemicals, ultraviolet rays, and abrasion.

• Jacket color is gray for indoor use only; other colors are available for outdoor applications.

The cable size is one of the most important parameters in a cable construction. It determines the current carrying capacity and resistance of the cable. The allowable voltage drop also depends on it.

In general, there are two types of cables: power cables and signal cables. Power cables are used to connect devices such as transformers and motors with power sources while signal cables are used to transmit data signals between devices such as computers.

MV cable size chart

Cable size is determined by cross-sectional area, conductor material, and the insulator material used in its construction.

Cable sizes (AWG) given below are based on solid copper conductors having a temperature rating of 50° C (122° F). In the case where wires or cables contain stranded conductors, use a larger AWG for proper current carrying capacity.

How do you size an MV wire?

First of all, check the voltage rating of the cable. The MV cable should have a voltage rating of at least 132 kV (1.6/0.15 = 833 A) and a temperature rating of at least 75°C (1 / 0.15 + 1 / 0.8 = 3). If these requirements are not met, select another cable with higher ratings.

1. Cable current carrying capacity

Ifull-load = 12.5 × 106 / 1.73 × 20 × 103 = 361 A.

Therefore subsequent current rating of cable to be 361 / 0.97 × 0.84 = 443 A

Isc = K × A / √t

Isc = 240 × 143 / √1 = 34.4 kA

Vd = Ifl × XL × sinφ + Ifl × R × cosφ volts
